Bosch Revolutionises e-Bike Security with App-Based Battery Lock

Bosch eBike Systems has unveiled an innovative new feature to address a persistent concern for e-bike owners: battery theft. Announced at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, the digital 'Battery Lock' system ensures that stolen batteries are rendered useless, making them far less appealing to thieves and bolstering e-bike security.

A Smarter Approach to Security

While traditional removable batteries, such as Bosch’s PowerTube and PowerPack models, rely on mechanical locks, the new Battery Lock introduces a digital layer of protection. This feature locks the battery digitally when the e-bike is powered off. If a locked battery is installed into another Bosch-equipped e-bike, motor assistance is automatically disabled, rendering the bike inoperable.

Gregor Dasbach, Head of Digital Business at Bosch eBike Systems, highlighted the significance of this development: “The battery is one of the most valuable e-bike components. With Battery Lock, riders get a smart security function that helps protect their e-bikes more effectively and gives them greater peace of mind. This innovation brings us closer to our vision of ensuring that no e-bike with a Bosch system is stolen in the future.”

Seamless Integration with Bosch’s Ecosystem

Battery Lock works in tandem with other Bosch security features, such as eBike Lock and eBike Alarm, providing a comprehensive theft protection system. The functionality is managed via the eBike Flow app, which allows users to handle digital keys with ease. Additionally, the system supports multiple digital keys for flexibility and can accommodate shared usage of batteries.

Key features:

  • Compatibility with all batteries within Bosch’s smart system, including DualBattery setups and the PowerMore 250 Range Extender.

  • Integration with displays like the Kiox 300 and Kiox 500, ensuring user-friendly operation.

  • A future-proof design that enhances overall e-bike security.

Available Summer 2025

The Battery Lock feature will be launched as part of the Flow+ subscription, set to debut in summer 2025. Bosch plans to offer the first year of Flow+ free of charge, with subsequent annual subscriptions costing $35. While some have critiqued the subscription model for essential security features, Bosch argues that it ensures the continued development and improvement of advanced protective solutions.
